Surjosnato Dhar: Founder of Smile Equal.
Surjosnato Dhar is the founder of Smile Equal, a nonprofit dedicated to advocating for ending racial bias, particularly subconscious stigmas. By bridging cultural gaps, and creating a supportive environment for people of all backgrounds, we can slowly erase that partiality from ourselves. Surjosnato has spent over 2 years volunteering in community services, inclusive communities through events, partnerships, and collaborative projects. Smile Equal was established with the goal of empowering young people, providing a safe space for individuals to share their experiences, seek guidance, and find solidarity.
“I believe that simply preaching for racial justice and equality isn’t enough. We receive the same set of core ideals and beliefs from our caretakers and they received their core values from those before them. Thus, bias generated long ago can linger and fester in generations beyond. It might not apparent, even to the biased individuals themselves because it is ingrained in their subconscious. To override this subtle ulcer on equal society, the path forward is to join our hands together and get to know each other to prove our subconscious bias wrong.” – Surjosnato Dhar
